I don't believe in couples therapy, a real couples therapy shouldn't be held with one female or male therapist, it should be two therapists of opposite sex, that's how you can get a little close to what THE COUPLE requires to move forward.

I think it’s simpler than this. If you’re in a monogamous relationship, misaligned sex drive and expectations around the intimacy of sex in the relationship are difficult to overcome, so I feel the better advice as a layman would be to take sexual compatibility seriously when considering a partner

Holding hands and cuddling are more intimate to me than sex.

Please don’t call that a need it’s desire and we can desire things and not have them when we call it a “need” it’s changing the dynamic

Yeah but needing sex to feel connected is a problem. Like how do children and siblings feel close and loved without sex? Oh maybe because sex is not a need. It’s a happy byproduct of a good romantic connection

This is a horrible take. All due respect. Been married two decades and everyone’s needs are important.

My professor explained it as “often men seek connection through sex.” Meaning both partners may want connection, but couples may misunderstand each other. Hope I’m making sense

It’s so hard to overcome the issue of one partner wanting sex to build connection and the other wanting connection to lead to sex. Even in a same sex marriage, this was a big issue during our couples therapy. I’m not sure we ever learned how to work through it even after a year of couples therapy.

Yessssss! And I don’t think a lot of guys realize this. You say you want more affection, but when I’m affectionate, it immediately turns into you wanting sex. Especially in the beginning stages of dating, that makes me hesitant to be affectionate because I’m not ready for sex yet and I don’t want my affection to be interpreted as me initiating it. Affection and sexual readiness aren’t always the same thing!

True. I have found that they fight most about responsibilities around the house - work load disparity. In my experience this is typically is part of the sex problem. This seems to get worse in couples with children.

It’s interesting that you said men are the problem. Your mom correctly noted that men and women have inverse cause/effect wiring. You’re the one who said it’s a problem - not her.

also what do you mean connection????? what if the definition of connection is different for both gender ???? as a man connection is acceptance then sex, I don't necessarily want to talk and many guys agree, it does not mean women are wrong by wanting their version of connection which what you are saying.

My ex wife said that starting with intimacy was agreeing with "my side" and not hers. She then said the therapist didn't like her and only liked me cause she "always" agreed with me. She basically threw temper tantrums about it all. It was also!

This is the struggle my ex-wife and I had. Now, on my second marriage, we both have a very similar sex drive, and we both love our relationship on a totally different level. My opinion on this is if there’s such an imbalance, it’s because the relationship is not the right one. I don’t think you can have a partner when your sex drives are so different. It creates resentment, and I’ve seen it go both ways.

It isn’t that one is a problem. It’s evolutionary biology. The evolutionary perspective will give you so many answers.

Not every touch should lead to sex. It shouldn’t be the goal. Too much pressure leads to unsatisfying sex anyway 🤷♂️. It’s difficult, but need to treat it, or approach intimacy, from the same place as when you date. With that said, both parties are responsible for the current state of the relationship. Everyone owns everything. It’s always a give and take. For lack of a better term.

So difficult for LGBT couples especially men we have to PREPARE OURSELVES before it can lead anywhere so a cuddle cant go further if one is not prepared, which then ruins the intimacy of it . If it isn't planned so sometimes lt makes it harder to enjoy. I think thats always is constant battle we face .
