The song
The song "El Hob Elly Kan" (also known as "Kan Ya Ma Kan") is one of the most famous songs by the Syrian artist Mayada El Hennawy. Released in 1980, it was written and composed by the renowned composer Baligh Hamdi. The song embodies feelings of longing and loss, and was musically arranged by Ammar El Shereei. The 1980s witnessed a fruitful collaboration between Mayada El Hennawy and Baligh Hamdi, during which he composed some of her most beautiful songs, and "El Hob Elly Kan" is considered one of the most prominent works that influenced her artistic career.The song was written as an expression of profound sadness after his separation from his wife and muse, the artist Warda Al-Jazairia, in 1979. It is said that he wrote it in a moment of painful reproach after Warda's harsh reaction to his inquiry about her.
