Long before St Brigid became a Christian saint, Brigid was an ancient Irish goddess of fire, healing, poetry, fertility, abundance and protection, deeply connected to the land and its sacred waters. Her presence is woven into Imbolc, the ancient festival of 1 February, when winter begins to loosen its grip and the first stirrings of spring awaken beneath the earth. It was a time of returning light, renewal and the promise of new life.
And then there is her cloak. In the old folklore, Brigid lays her cloak upon the land and it miraculously stretches and expands, covering the earth beneath it. I love the symbolism of that image. A single piece of cloth becoming large enough to shelter an entire landscape, as though Brigid herself is drawing a circle of protection around her people and the land.
Perhaps that is why Brigid has endured for so long in Ireland. Beneath the later Christian story lives something much older, the memory of a powerful feminine presence who carries the fire through the darkness, brings the first light of spring, and spreads her cloak over us as a reminder that we are held, protected and connected to the land. ✨🔥🌿💚
