The issue is and will always be: school is a behaviorist system. We keep trying to fit a square peg in a round hole by adding cognitivism into schools - that’s all my teaching program was about. But as soon as central office said test scores need to go up by 9%, the behaviorism kicks in. I can’t supersede central office behaviorist decrees with cognitivist approaches. Extrinsic rewards do not work for cognitive efforts and it’s ugly brother; behaviorist efforts (test scores) prodded with appeals to cognition. I have no doubt this metacognitive process works, but if I don’t attach it to a grade, it won’t be done by those who need it the most. And once those who need it are hip to the game, they’ll phone it in. Then the cognitive exercise will become a game of them trying to skirt the “rule” to get the grade. The cousin of Goodheart’s law.

I would love a miniseries on just working metacognition opportunities, like into backwards mapping for example. It’s one of those terms they love to throw at us at PDs/PLCs but not give us the time or tools to really implement it effectively!

I’m wondering if I can apply this into my own life and maybe the lives of my kids even though they’re teenagers and don’t want to listen to me as much as before

Metacognition is an overarching tool that unlocks the ability to learn any subject material. That and critical thinking really should be our building blocks.

Any good music teacher does this from day one. We are student metacognition factories.
We actively did this about 20 years ago. it's funny how things come back around on the circle again!

This is all so true. If modeling of something anything is done without the connected, think aloud, then the learner doesn't know why the modeler did what they did, just what the final answer, or example, looked like they don't know why it looked like that way. They don't know why the answer is right or more right than a possible other one. The more metacognition is taught as a strategy. The more... here's a shocker.... Critical thinking our society becomes

I always push "thinking about what you are thinking" - when you read something what questions do you have write down what you dont understand, what do you get, and what can you connect new content to what you just read. also, breaking down sections of what you don't understand. summarize what you are reading. etc. I love making kids do this

I’m glad our entire district is using “discourse strategies” all about making thinking visible and I always think allowed out of habit 🤣
