@sciencefunn: Research led by Dr. Eva Ramón-Gallegos explored a technique called photodynamic therapy, which uses a light-sensitive compound plus targeted light to destroy abnormal or infected cervical cells. In one small group of 29 women in Mexico City, HPV was no longer detectable in 100% of participants six months after treatment. 🤯 But here’s the important part - this was not a universal HPV cure. It was a small clinical study focused on cervical HPV in women, with limited follow-up, and HPV can also clear naturally through the immune system. Researchers still need larger, controlled studies and longer-term data before anyone can claim a guaranteed cure. What makes this especially exciting is that later research has continued to show promising results for photodynamic therapy in treating HPV-associated cervical lesions and persistent infections. The idea is particularly appealing because it may target abnormal tissue while preserving more healthy cervical tissue than some traditional surgical procedures. And that matters because persistent infection with certain high-risk HPV strains is the main cause of cervical cancer. So no, scientists haven’t simply cured HPV. But they may be developing a powerful new way to help the body eliminate persistent HPV infections and treat precancerous cervical changes, and that could become a very big deal.
