Some leave because they are trapped in indefinite national service, with no clear end in sight. Some leave because they feel they have no freedom to choose the life they want. Some leave because they fear detention, punishment, or simply living under constant uncertainty. Some leave because they cannot see a future for themselves. They want to study. They want to work. They want to build families. They want to have a normal life. They want to wake up without wondering what tomorrow will bring. And then there are those who leave because they feel they have no other choice. But leaving Eritrea is not easy. You are leaving your parents. Your siblings. Your friends. Your childhood home. Your language. Your culture. Everything you have ever known. And the journey itself can be terrifying. Many Eritreans who attempt to reach safety face deserts, dangerous borders, smugglers, human traffickers, kidnapping, torture, abuse, and extortion. Some never make it. Some disappear. Some families spend years not knowing what happened to the person they love. So when you see an Eritrean refugee somewhere in the world, remember that you are seeing more than someone who “left their country.” You are seeing someone who made an impossible choice. A choice between staying somewhere they no longer felt they could live the life they wanted, and risking everything to search for something better. They did not leave their memories behind. They did not leave their love for their people behind. They did not suddenly stop caring about Eritrea. They carried Eritrea with them. Behind every Eritrean who fled is a story that deserves to be heard. This is why we need to listen. This is why we need to speak.
