Wealthy citizens lived in luxurious domus, while millions of ordinary people lived in crowded insulae. Streets were filled with merchants, craftsmen, soldiers, slaves, politicians, and travelers. Monuments & Entertainment The Colosseum, enormous baths, temples, aqueducts, and monumental forums demonstrated Rome's extraordinary wealth and engineering. Legacy Although the Western Roman Empire fell in the 5th century AD, Rome's influence survived through its law, architecture, engineering, language, and culture. Rome was more than a city.
