Not every relationship deserves to be held on to. True affection is mutual—and dignity begins when we realise that one-sided giving is not love. If a person does not offer me the same affection That I have offered them, Then know that I will leave them. In this verse, Sariʿ al-Ghawani draws a clear boundary against unbalanced relationships: when the affection you receive does not match what you give, walking away becomes more honourable than remaining attached. Love that is forced or offered merely out of obligation cannot bring the heart peace, nor can it build a sincere relationship. Muslim ibn al-Walid al-Ansari, known as Sariʿ al-Ghawani, was an Abbasid poet from Kufa who later settled in Baghdad and became connected to the court of Caliph Harun al-Rashid. The caliph gave him his celebrated nickname after hearing his poetry. He was also among the early poets to make extensive use of badiʿ—the art of rhetorical and ornamental expression—combining delicate love poetry with elegant language and memorable wisdom.
