We responded, but we did not hit civilian populations." He also accused Israel of "committing genocide" in Gaza, noting the high civilian death toll and the impact it's had on regional stability. "We only seek to live independently," he said. "We are the ones who cause instability? Those who are committing terrorism and committing crimes, are they the protectors of peace and stability? None of the international laws have been adhered to by them. This is what we're facing." His speech marked the first time a president of a country actively at war with the U.S. came to New York to address the U.N. General Assembly. This is what keeps me up at night. I served in Desert Storm, so this one hits close to home. Bin Laden laid out his reasons for attacking America: retaliation for our sanctions and bombing of Iraq, our propping up of Saudi Arabia's monarchy and other Arab dictators, and our unconditional support of Israel, even when Israel was wrong. He pointed to things we had done that caused generational harm to Muslim families across the Middle East. Of course he exaggerated, and he blamed us for some things that were never ours to own, but he was also right about many of the harms we caused. Here is my point: if those actions helped create Bin Laden, if they gave him enough credibility that a group of men were willing to die just to take American lives, then what are our actions in the Middle East creating today? What retaliation will we face long after Trump is gone for his attack on Iran? For ripping up the Iran nuclear deal? Presidents have usually honored the agreements of the administrations before them, and when they disagreed, they negotiated new ones. Because of Trump, any future president who tries to make a deal will have no credibility, no way to promise the other side it won't simply be torn up by the next administration. We will reap every one of Trump's harms and bad decisions. Of that I am certain, and I lose sleep over it.
