I'm confused. you make a bio-indifferent argument (men are in charge bc civil responsibility got arbitrarily male coded long ago), but then you sneak in a bio essentialist point: if women were in charge there would be less interest in conquering land. as if women are *by nature* the peace loving sex. is that what you're saying?

I’m late, but doesn’t geography and the availability of resources come into play at the earliest point in the forming of patriarchy? Nomadic peoples “shared” the land and its resources out of necessity. Adjacency to water being the primary reason to settle and claim land.

I wish we had more information on the Americas prior to 1492. I would love to know what it truly looked like, and not the fragments that were found after disease had swept the land.

I like all of your points a ton, but I also wanted to point out that tons of women also died in childbirth.

I heard someone else mentioned the violence factor. You brought it up in this video here. They were saying, and I second this, that a matriarchal society is much more communal, much more inclined to “talk things out“. A patriarchal society on the other hand, is much more inclined to violence. So what happens when you get a matriarch of society up against a patriarchal society? When one person just wants to talk it out, and the other one says I don’t wanna talk. I’ll just kill you. Perhaps, to take over that land like you’re bringing up here. So in that circumstance, a major society, obviously would not be the victor. And then history repeats.

In addition I think at some point the truth that women, as childbearing, need protection got confused with the idea that women are weak.

Woah I’m super late to this video. How much of a role did child care play in this transition? Or is that more of a modern issue

Love Jared Diamond’s article “The worst mistake in human history.” He pins a lot of other things other than patriarchy on the advent of farming.

I key part is change in local climate. Droughts put pressure on claiming and defending land

Rome defeated a lot of tribes and areas and replaced their cultures with patriarchal Roman culture. They also converted the majority of Europe to Catholicism which is also very patriarchal itself.

Once hierarchical structures reinforce power structures, they become hard to disentangle. So much propaganda is built on the idea that the hierarchical structures we are born into are just/fixable. The power structures are scaffolded by selective outcome focus (US best military, US best GDP, US freedom place, etc)

Very good points. The patriarchy has overstayed It’s welcome. It would be interesting to hear your thoughts on how patriarchal religions contributed to this misalignment.

My immediate answer was violence, violence is why patriarchy….and then you explained in many more eloquent words the historical context of why my instinctual but not super-informed answer was correct.

I have wondered this for years. I did know it started with the ownership of land, but I didn’t connect protection and conquering of land.

I would add that all 200 modern countries are patriarchical as modern states are built off of political science which means governments have a monopoly of power over a jurisdiction. we even call them failed states when the government loses thst monopoly.

The idea that a matriarchal society would be less violent, or that men participated in violence because of natural aptitude, is an idea created by patriarchy. It's bioessential pseudoscience. . A more objective argument for why men have historically been more involved in violence would be that we are more biologically expendable. In an ancient society where the next generation is so critical, you would want to safeguard the people who can only have 1 child a year, compared to the ones who can have hundreds. That's also most likely the origin of traditional polygamy and the practice of brothers taking each other's widows.
