Valencia oder Paris? Was denkt ihr
After water dances and ceremony the Makishi make their way from the forests of Zambia towards the palace. After a ceremony with the king and being blessed to enter the village, the Makishi storm the village approaching shops asking for alms. The symbolism of Makishi masks and performances also reflects historical concerns of the communities. Characters embody order and chaos, fertility and sterility, bravery and cowardice—qualities that were essential in societies that relied heavily on farming, hunting, and warfare. Some figures such as Kayipu, associated with fear and wildness, reminded initiates of the dangers of straying from social norms, while figures like Pwevo emphasized fertility and the importance of family life. This duality shows how Makishi masquerades historically acted as a moral compass for the entire community.
