@madelineriveramolina: CASTILLO DE SAN MARCOS St. Augustine was founded by the Spanish in 1565, and Spain needed to protect its settlement and the important shipping routes along Florida's coast. Before the Castillo, the Spanish built nine different wooden forts, but they repeatedly deteriorated or were destroyed by storms, fire, insects, and attacks. After English pirates attacked St. Augustine in 1668, Spanish authorities finally decided that the city needed a permanent stone fortress. The darkest part of its American history is an important part of the Castillo's story that sometimes gets overshadowed by the architecture. After the United States took possession, the fort eventually became known as Fort Marion. During the Second Seminole War, Osceola and approximately 200 Seminoles were imprisoned there in 1837. Osceola had come to St. Augustine under a flag of truce to negotiate and was captured. He was later transferred to Fort Moultrie, where he died in 1838. The fort was later used to imprison Native Americans from other parts of the country as well. In 1875, 74 Native American captives from five Great Plains tribes were held there, and in 1886, nearly 500 Chiricahua Apache. #castillosanmarcos #staugustinefl
