@blackpeopleunitenow: Long before Adolf Hitler was born, the swastika was a sacred symbol. Its name comes from the Sanskrit word svastika, meaning well-being or good fortune. For thousands of years, it appeared in Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism, and many cultures across Asia, Africa, Europe, and the Americas. The United States Holocaust Memorial Museum dates its use to at least 5,000 years before Hitler made it the centerpiece of the Nazi flag But during the early 20th century, far-right German nationalist movements began using the symbol to represent their racist idea of “Aryan identity.” In 1920, Hitler’s Nazi Party officially adopted its own stylized version. After the Nazis took power, Hitler’s government placed it on flags, uniforms, buildings, propaganda, and military insignia. In 1935, the Nazi swastika flag became Germany’s official national flag. (encyclopedia.ushmm.org) The Nazis did not create the swastika. They hijacked an ancient sacred symbol and forced their racism, war, persecution, and genocide onto its meaning. Within one generation, a symbol used for blessings became across much of the Western world a symbol of terror. Yet it remains sacred to millions of Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains today. That is the power of extremist nationalism It does not always create something new. Sometimes it steals something sacred, weaponizes it and makes the world forget what it meant before.
