My dad is the only one who knows the code of a crucial legacy system at a very large, recognizable, important company. He’s being kept on at the company at full salary with stock options just to keep that system running. He’s 79. He gets on calls to shoot the sh*t with his coworkers and terrorize his 35 year old boss who can’t fire him

at my last job I got given solo responsibility for a legacy system that was older than me because no one else wanted to touch it. no one could train me on it either. awful. but the upside was I got exempted from productivity measures because there was no way to do them for that system

You could spend 3 years and 30 million dollars replacing it with a modern enterprise solution and you’ll get to the end of that process and realize you need to switch back

And then when you do eventually replace it, people will actually be begging for the legacy system back

We chained “the binder (version 2)”to a support pillar. You can’t lose it anymore without compromising the structural integrity of the building. Guess what happened to version 1 that inspired this decision.

My company got bought up. Most systems were replaced. A few exist indefinitely somehow. I work an entirely different job within the new company. I don't wanna be Gary anymore. I'm always Gary.

My friend works county IT and in house software development and he runs into stuff like this all the time. Ancient machines with no manuals and archaic software that have somehow become the lynchpin upon which rests the daily operations of the entire county. One guy knows how it works and goes in and whispers to it like a priest soothing a mad God back to slumber.
