The city is planning a multi-phase overhaul of 2.5 miles of Highway 99 between 244th and 210th Streets, aimed at making one of the area’s busiest corridors safer and more walkable. Here are the details:
• 💰 The entire project is estimated at roughly $173 million.
• 🚧 The first section, from 244th to 238th, is expected to cost around $30 million and begin construction in 2029.
• 🏗️ A second phase, costing nearly $49 million, is planned to follow in 2030.
• 🚲 Improvements include buffered bike lanes, wider sidewalks, upgraded ADA ramps and better lighting.
• 🌳 New tree buffers will help create separation between pedestrians and vehicle traffic.
• 🚗 Some changes are already here, including a new center median and a speed limit reduction from 45 mph to 40 mph.
• 💵 Roughly $94 million in later phases still depends on securing additional funding. It’ll take years to complete, but the finished project could dramatically change what Highway 99 looks and feels like through Edmonds.
