@conscious.app: New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani wins a $131.5 million settlement from DoorDash for underpaying more than 260,000 delivery workers. The city's Department of Consumer and Worker Protection, the agency that enforces New York's labor rules, opened the case after dozens of DoorDash couriers reported they had not been paid for deliveries they already completed. Investigators pulled terabytes of DoorDash's own records and analyzed 152 million individual payments covering 110 million working hours. The violations stretched from April 2022 to June 2026, more than four years. Since 2023, New York has required apps to pay couriers a minimum hourly rate, now $22.13 before tips. DoorDash raised pay to meet it but excluded parts of trip and waiting time from the math. DoorDash posted a public apology reading, in part, "We messed up," calling the mistakes unintentional and blaming software bugs. Mamdani replied he had never heard a $131.5 million settlement described that way. Workers who were never paid receive roughly triple what they were owed, and workers paid late receive double. More than 27,000 couriers will get over $1,000 and around 4,000 will get over $5,000. DoorDash posted record quarterly profits in 2025 while underpaying the people carrying the bags.
