so, as a white person, i stared at the converse ad for an embarrassingly long time confused on what the backlash was about. At first glance, I did recognize, “oh, a person is hanging. yikes. that’s bad.” Then I opened the full screen image and realized it was a pair of shoes in someone’s hand, not a second person hanging. So I was confused again that maybe I was missing something else. I didn’t notice the cone-shaped white figure until I saw it pointed out in comments…. but now that I’ve seen it, it sticks out like a sore thumb. You can’t unsee it. I honestly don’t think the ad was intentional racism, not because I’m naive or optimistic, but because frankly it’s a stupid business decision. HOWEVER - I think a black person would clock the implications immediately, unlike myself as a white person. So, to me at least, it’s obvious there is little to no diversity in their advertisement team, and they’re not listening to or considering the input of the black people they do have. It’s shining a huge spotlight on the true culture of the brand behind the scenes.

They didn’t , it was a cropped picture from the add. When you watch the add you can’t see anything like that. I will admit I was pretty appalled when I first saw it but then I watched the add….it didn’t seem like that at all to me. I will admit that my opinion on it means little…considering my lack of melanin. Maybe there was something else that I missed.
