🚨Handling the “sensitive over- thinker” 👇 🧠 As a manager when one of our direct reports is upset or angry about our feedback it can be an instinctive reaction to become defensive and blame them for being too sensitive, over thinking things, or not being “good” at receiving feedback. 🚫 I would highly recommend not reacting in this way. In any dynamic we always have a part to play even if it’s a small part. Perhaps our feedback was a bit on the critical side or wasn’t tailored enough to the individual. ▶️ Some people are more sensitive and do over think things. This is a great strength and shouldn’t be punished. It does mean they will likely need you to be sensitive to how you give them feedback to ensure it enhances their performance rather than the opposite. 💡 A great way to build trust with your direct reports is by being receptive to their feedback even if it feels unreasonable and you don’t agree. Try to see their perspective and acknowledge that you may not have done your best job at sharing your feedback and try again. 🔥 For people to be receptive to feedback from us we have to show we are receptive to feedback from them and that we will act upon it. Many people think if they do this as a manager it is a sign of weakness- it is in fact the opposite. It’s how trusted relationships are built and it’s through trusted relationships we deliver great results. 📌 Please remember the advice offered in this video is generalised. You know your situation better than anyone else so trust your instincts, if this doesn’t fit your situation ignore it. #worktips #leadershipdevelopment #communicationskills #corporatelife #emotionalintelligence #managingpeople #managertips #feedback #difficultconversations
