for anyone wondering what he means the rain would flood the trenches causing wet mud to build up often causing trench foot and the rain would also mix with the gases and toxic/radioactive material or smoke from the firearms so basically toxic rain+trench foot

explaining: the soldiers were more terrified of rain because if it rains it makes mud and in thoes trenches it would get filled with rain creating lits of mud wich can burry some of the soldiers and they would be burried alive and then end up dying (i dont know if all of this is corect but im pretty sure it is becuase i learned about this last year and sorry if anything is spelled incorectly)

Explanation: Soldiers feared the rain because if you was to stay in water for hours/ too long then your foot would get so numb and you would develop a bacteria called trench foot which is basically when it bleeds out or swells and you can die from it which some soldiers did cos they didn't have any medicine
