Tiptree Wilkin & Sons has made Tiptree jam in the same Essex village since 1885. Through a trust, employees own almost half the company, and profits buy them more shares. No outside buyer has taken it. Kalona SuperNatural This organic dairy buys milk from Amish and Mennonite family farms around Kalona, Iowa, where the average herd is 35 cows, not 1,000. Its owner is a small local family company, not a food conglomerate. Pitaya Foods This San Diego frozen fruit company buys from more than 800 small family farms and helped them earn organic certification. Privately held, and a certified B Corp, audited on how it treats workers and suppliers. Ice Cream for Bears Founder Tim Berg sold his first pint at St. Louis farmers markets in 2022. Sweetened only with raw honey, grass-fed dairy from small family farms, now in thousands of stores, and still run by him. Many of the "small" brands next to these on the shelf now send their profits to Nestle, Unilever, Coca-Cola, or a private equity fund. The label stays the same, the ownership doesn't.
