@drtoddphillips: I preached the traditional Christian explanation of hell for years: humanity sinned, hell is the consequence, and because God loves us, Jesus provides a way out. Eventually I realized that explanation skips the question I actually needed answered. If God is all-knowing and all-powerful, then under traditional eternal-conscious-torment theology, God is not merely rescuing people from a terrible system. He is ultimately responsible for the system itself. And an all-powerful God had other logically possible options: temporary punishment, rehabilitation, annihilation, eventual reconciliation, or something else entirely. So “God provided a way out” no longer answers the problem for me. I was raised Christian and my mother and most of my family are still very religious. I believe that there is a real possibility that God, or a "god-like" creator exists, but in no way do I believe that he behaves in the way that religions describe.
