@oboe_learning: This guy does the best demos ever! Professor Walter Lewin demonstrates projectile motion: a thrown object moves forward at a constant speed while gravity pulls it down faster and faster. Those two motions combined create a parabola, the same curve behind every basketball shot, water fountain, and cannonball. Because the forward speed never changes, the path can be predicted and drawn before the object is launched. how come ball never came back down exact though? he said close

it's not that simple in the real world there a many variables that effect results we don't live in a vacuum and space is not a true vacuum

Wait till you see him draw a dotted line on the chalkboard… For an asymptote … he has a lot of lectures online..Llewelyn … Just don’t go look up the reason he had to leave

nah the parabola is too straight at the ends - looks more like a half sine wave. nice attempt though

In earths atmosphere, you must take wind resistant into account as well. It’s not steady forward. It will be slowing down which affects the arc of trajectory. The more wind resistance the steeper the arc.

It is a parabola only in a vacuum or when ignoring friction or wind resistance. I think it helps that in his demo the cart and the ball both have similar enough horizontal deceleration that the funnel catches the ball just fine. Typical of physicists tho, "assume an infinite frictionless plane... 😅" or of engineers "assume the horse is a sphere..."
