I’ve been in that place and for me, contemplating suicide was never about wanting to die. It was about desperately wanting the suffering to end. I had treatment-resistant major depression. I tried medication after medication, different psychologists, different therapies. There were even psychologists who ultimately sent me back to my psychiatrist because they didn’t know how to help me. I wasn’t someone who hadn’t tried. I had tried, and I was still suffering. When you’re in that kind of prolonged mental, emotional, and physical pain, it can become all-consuming. It isn’t necessarily about replaying your life or deciding that the people you love don’t matter. It can simply become: “I cannot keep living in this much pain.” I think that’s the part people need to understand: sometimes the person doesn’t actually want their life to end. They want their suffering to end. And those are two very different things. That said, if you’re reading this and you’re in that place right now, please don’t make yourself solve the rest of your life tonight. You only need to get through this moment. Tell someone what is happening, stay with someone you trust, and reach out for immediate help if you don’t feel safe. Sometimes surviving the moment has to come before believing that life can get better. Because even when you cannot see a way out of the suffering, that doesn’t necessarily mean there isn’t one. That’s why I’m still here 🙏
