The Booker once again equating the "human" and the "universal" experience as the masculine experience. Not surprising and good you're using your platform to call it out. Love your account.

The Things We Never Say, and Switzy - both books I loved, are also about the masculine experience 😭 and I’m just now realizing it now that you mentioned it

I told myself this year would be the year I get into the yearly Booker shortlists… I think I’ll wait till next year 😬

Huh, I like your take quite a bit. I find this especially interesting because I have been seeing a lot of discourse lately about how men aren’t reading. Also, in contrast to the theme, in this era of “weird girl lit” (which I love), it is interesting that the booker prize brought more contemporary, masculine lit to light. Whatever it takes, I guess.

Last year’s international booker was focused on the “feminine” experience, I’d recommend checking those out, if you haven’t already. Totally agree on this, we either get a straight man’s experience or a gay man’s experience.

I am currently reading Shuggie bain and I like the writer. I like the way he describes stuff, very vivid and sometimes disgusting lol

Did you read All Them Dogs? It's also a take on queerness in a hyper masculine setting.

switzy and vivisectors should have been short listed... black bag was fun, but not prize worthy.

Also going between listening and reading the Disappearers. It’s heavy. Loved the uniqueness of Black Bag - was disappointed the Renovation was omitted- but the protagonist was female so you’ve nailed that. I picked up May we Feed the King this morning and will finish it tomorrow- very engaging. Things we Never says is Stoner vibes with flaccid politics thrown in.

I can’t help but feel the major literary prizes need someone to come in and shake them up. The way publishers pick which books to nominate also needs some looking at…

I was devastated that Switzy didn’t make it onto the short list. And the theme you identified applies within it, as well.

May I please suggest the renovation from the list. I know it didn’t make the shortlist but it’s so good 🖤🖤🖤

May We Feed the King sounds like the one for me. Power nobody wanted says more about a changing world than power someone fought for.

why is it always about men? statistics show that female readers account for 78% in the US and 60% in Europe, why don’t they ever make the experience relatable for Us and not men/queer men
