@thetimes: Why has this Sense and Sensibility adaptation fallen flat? The issue shadowing this new high-profile Austen adaptation, featuring Daisy Edgar-Jones and backed by Brit Film powerhouse Working Title, has always been one of contemporaneity. How was the novice film-maker Georgia Oakley, director of the startling Blue Jean, going to match Fennell et al and drag Austen’s debut novel into the present? Sadly, she hasn’t *FOR NEWS PURPOSES* #movie #film #celebrity #senseandsensibility #janeausten
Counterpoint - this is EXACTLY what we want in an Austen adaptation. They should put all this on the poster.

Some films shouldn’t be redone. Sense and Sensibility with Emma Thompson, Kate Winslet, Alan Rickman and Hugh Grant is perfect.

Why would we want any Austen work to be "dragged into the present"? It ain't broke, don't fix it!

Why are we comparing it to two of the worst adaptations of recent times? Wuthering Heights was pretty but horribly written and Persuasion was unwatchable.

Do we want to drag Austen anywhere, especially to the present?? We like it where it belongs... regency period.

“Bafflingly conventional” sounds incredibly refreshing 💯 I don’t want Wuthering Heights to be the new standard at all.

I absolutely loved it. I feel like Austen never needs “modernisation”. It was beautifully shot, delved further into the relationships that precious versions.

There so much classic literature out there that’s never been done. Let’s see something new! We don’t need these re-makes, we already have classics of the classics!

The latest wuthering heights and persuasion adaptations were both panned, nobody is asking for more of those and I think most would prefer to forget they exist

I think it’s objectively wrong to claim that Austen’s works are devoid of contemporary relevance, and that directors must resort to adding in salacious scenes that shift the plot’s core themes to make these stories appealing. Austens works are timeless as they are, and modern audiences deserve more credit than the Emerald Fennel’s of the world give them.

Half the enjoyment in the book is because of the time and place it is set. If getting that right isn’t considered important then I’m not really interested
