@fabrisgassmoney: HE HAD SPENT HIS LIFE TEACHING SURGEONS HOW TO REPAIR THE AORTA. THEN, AT 97, HIS OWN AORTA BEGAN TO TEAR. Michael DeBakey knew exactly what was happening. On New Year's Eve 2005, the legendary Houston surgeon experienced severe chest pain that radiated toward his back. He recognized the danger immediately. It was an acute aortic dissection—the very kind of catastrophic condition he had spent decades studying and treating. At 97, however, DeBakey initially did not want surgery. He understood the enormous risks of major open-heart surgery at his age. But his condition eventually deteriorated, and the people around him faced an extraordinary dilemma: whether to proceed with an operation despite his earlier wishes. On February 9, 2006, surgeons operated. sylyed ged the damaged portion of his arta with a The procedure lasted hours. And the patient on the operating table was not an ordinary patient. It was the man whose career had helped make modern vascular surgery possible. Decades earlier, DeBakey had pioneered techniques for treating diseased arteries and aortic aneurysms. He helped establish the use of durable synthetic vascular grafts, including Dacron, which became an important material in arterial reconstruction. There was even something wonderfully personal about that achievement. DeBakey had learned to sew from his mother, and in the 1950s he famously used his wife's sewing machine while developing early Dacron grafts. Now, decades later, a synthetic graft was helping save his own life. He survived. And remarkably, after a long recovery, he returned to work and continued contributing to medicine. In 2008, shortly before his death, DeBakey received the Congressional Gold Medal. He died on July 11, 2008, just weeks before his 100th birthday. His life contained a remarkable circle: He studied the disease. He helped develop the treatments. He trained the surgeons. And eventually, he became the patient. The man who spent his life giving other people more time was given more time himself. And for one extraordinary final chapter, the surgeon who had taught the world how to repair the human heart and arteries had to place his own life in the hands of the people he had taught.

Dr. George Noon was my surgeon and Dr. DeBakey was also in the surgery room in 2002 what a lucky guy I was to be in that hospital with those 2 pioneers taking care of me. They were both so polite and professional just unbelievable gentleman.

Life is full of ironies. Thankfully all his good deeds ; his immense talent and teachings he gave away for decades allowed a new generation to be ready to save his own life when it was needed. That is going full circle.

What a remarkable man! I remember when he was called on to Moscow to do the by pass surgery on the then president of the country Boris Yeltsen. He inspired me so much as I was a young medical student in Moscow. He was old then and passed on the task to one of his students while he supervised in the OR. RIP!
