@.slightlyorganized: “But you can still buy it on Amazon.” That's one of the arguments I hear most often in conversations about book bans, and it's factually true in many cases. But it raises another question: Is being available for purchase the same thing as being accessible? For an adult with money, transportation, and a way to purchase a book, removal from a library may not create much of a barrier. Change the reader, though, and the answer can change too. And even the term book ban isn't as simple as it sounds. The American Library Association distinguishes bans from other restrictions on access, while PEN America uses a broader definition for school book bans that includes some restrictions that diminish access. This isn't a carousel about telling parents what their own children should read. It's about asking what happens when a decision affects what other people's children can access, too. So maybe “Can you still buy it?” isn't the end of the conversation. Who can still access it? What would you consider a book ban?
