First off, I realized that the way I was taught this story always implied that God cursed her with barrenness. Looking at it afresh, the text doesn’t specifically say that. It could be implied. It seems it might just be saying that she lost favor with David and he never slept with her again, so she remained childless. Also, that comment about the slave girls seeing him dance half-naked…it seems like it might have been rooted in some very real insecurity and upset that she risked everything for him and he married other women, and then – once she was settled with another man who seemingly loved her – had her come back to him. And we have no idea of David’s motivations for that. Did he care for her? Was he rewarding her loyalty by making her a royal wife again? Or was it a way to garner more legitimacy in the eyes of the people? And whatever his motivations really were, what did *she* think? We’ll never know, but if she was jealous, I think it was pretty understandable.

The Bible usually is not fair to women sometimes but it is fine. I always felt, Michal did not deserve that. David was promiscuous and they let it slide until he takes someone's wife. Michal one single mistake and she is punished for it

God has been showing me a lot lately, that a lot of peoples conditions in the bible we’re not direct punishment from God, but rather a literal natural consequence. For example, God did not tell Adam “if you eat this fruit I will smite you” he said “if you eat this fruit, you will surely die”…that’s not a punishment, that’s a condition. And when god asked Adam “where are you” he wasn’t talking about a literal location. Their choice caused a natural separation between God. Up until they ate the fruit, God literally walked with Adam in the cool of evening. Imagine God coming to take his daily night walk with you, and when he shows up, instead of being ready, you’re hiding because all of the sudden you realize you’re far from God…and naked. That’s when God asked “who told you that you are naked” ?

as a woman my heart sobs for Michal. however, I think the point for her story is she didnt follow after the Lord, she turned cold in her bitterness, whether she had reason or not for that, it is her pride that turned her from God's favor in this. We won't know if she turned back to God later in life, as she is unfortunately not important to the overall story. but its not so black and white with her and David.

I remember reading this account and feeling convicted, but also upset I felt convicted. I saw myself in Michal, in love with a man who doesn't return it truly, then she sees this man she gave up so much for, married to other women, dancing, and not at all distraught the way she is...still he Lord loved David, so it seems He punished her for her bitterness and resentment. My conviction was despite what we think, we are to bend to God's will.

I always felt bad about the new husband that chased after her. she left a man that was clearly devastated to lose her for a man who just added her to his bulk of wives just because he could. not because he actually loved her. Michals story always makes me wonder.

We also think she never gave birth and was barren but the Bible came back to tell us in 2 Samuel 21:8 that she did… however she never gave birth in the house of David.

it gets worse because in 2 Samuel 21:8, we see that Michal raised her nephews as her own children, but David took them and gave them up to satisfy a blood feud. some of the most hateful, spiteful things ever done, we're because love was allowed to turn into bitterness.

This story got me so emotional. I wouldn’t blame Michal and also David was not a perfect man. But as a woman I’ve learnt that people can hurt you and your life might not go as planned. But in all; Don’t let what hurt you change who you become. It is better to heal before your pain becomes bitterness.

Excellent perspective. I always lowkey felt some type of way about how Michal’s story was told. But you see, in my opinion, I think the core difference between David and Michal is how each handled offence. Saul had maltreated and antagonised David so much, yet he remained loyal to Saul. Even when he had Saul’s life in his hand, he refused to touch him, because You must never touch(i.e harm) the Lord’s anointed. Both David and Michal were badly treated, but one continued to honour their oppressor because he(Saul) was the Lord’s anointed(even if the spirit had departed from him, the anointing remained), while the other(Michal) despised their offender(David, who was also the Lord’s anointed) in her heart. And the heart is what matters to God.
