@jordyng1227: I’m not tagging them because this is genuinely not an attempt to hate on anyone. But until you get to the place where you realize that no one is coming to save you, and you HAVE to be the knight and not the damsel, your life will never improve and the change we so desperately need will never come. Some chronically ill people are more privledged than others, myself and this creator included. Why we have chosen to not use that provledge for positive change and growth, I will never understand 💔 #chronicillness #pots #genz #motivation #mindset

I keep getting called ableist every time I say that you can work from home if you can spend 8+ hours a day on your phone. You can’t say you can’t work from a computer at home because of “migraines” when you look at your phone for over 8 hours. Same types of screens. But it’s ableist I guess to suggest that. I’d love to see screen time for some of these people lmao.

A lot of us are skeptical cause Shy has a YouTube channel where she’s actively driving over an hour to appointments, shopping trips and is very different from how she portrays herself on TikTok

Love everything you said! And I’ve been disabled for 44 years. I tried to give suggestions, shared some experiences and I got rudely called an ableist. I knew then they (these negative posters) don’t want to hear anything positive!

this was very empathetic, mature, and reflects how i feel mostly. i understand (and i know you do, too) the urge to just give up and wallow. tbh i allow myself days to do this sometimes, but then i get back up. my drs have all said how detrimental it is to go inactive or to never push through. the best advice i received from my PT was “don’t push through pain but always push through discomfort.” it reframed how i thought. this is what i wish some disabled people understood. i have to keep active or my conditions will worsen. i fear this is happening to other disabled people when it could be prevented.

I had to leave a comment the other day explaining that it is EXTREMELY PRIVILEGED to assume that if someone is ill enough, they can just stop working. Who’s going to pay the rent? For food? For medical bills!?!? sometimes you can have a debilitating illness and still have NO CHOICE but to make it work. I have a chronic spine condition that causes pain ranging from mild discomfort to I have to walk with a cane today, and I never know what each day will hold. I still have to work. My job, by law, provides me accommodations which allow me to do that. I keep going. I don’t let my pain control my life. Are there things I can’t do? Of course. Working isn’t one of them.

I’m chronically ill and disabled. On disability. I would LOVE to work. The problem is I know that with my disability and everything I deal with I would not be a reliable employee. It really stinks. I feel like I’m missing out on life and I’m not a part of society. I’m basically a shut in. But I try to look at it in a more positive light because instead of working, I take care of my household as much as I possibly can. cleaning and making dinners taking care of my animals. Things like that. But I have been in that thought process of I’m never gonna be able to do anything again I should just lay down and except my feet and it is such a dangerous mindset because it is a very easy thing to slip into in a very hard thing to get out of. This was a really mature and graceful response to how this creator has been responding and acting on TikTok. I hope you’re doing well with your illness. 💖💖💖

My job was the same way. I proved myself and when I went to them and told them what was going on with me, they asked me how they could help me so I could continue to work for them. No, it’s not fair that we have to do that, but unfortunately we do, but I also feel like doing that also helped me mentally to not let my health issues defined who I was because there was more to me than that. Nothing is handed to us and nor should it be.

Yes! Please say it louder for the people in the back 📣 We all eventually go through this phase but we have to realize no one is going to save us and we need to find the strength to function. And if you are one of those people who does have a savior in your life, this tends to enable you and make things wors. I’ve seen it time and again.

I have cerebral palsy bc I had a brain hemorrhage as a preemie and someone called me ableist! All bc I said I had physical therapy to learn how to walk as a baby. When I was a toddler I would sometimes limp when I walked from pain but I kept walking to make my body stronger. I said someone who has been able bodied WILL atrophy their bodies if they suddenly use a wheelchair or become bed bound. I grew up sick/always going to the hospital and it’s like they don’t understand some of us have lived our whole lives in pain but keep trying to stay healthy and active. It’s a slap in the face to real children/adults who put in effort to live normal as possible with their conditions.

You’re absolutely nailed it. They don’t want help they want the viral content and actually know is some rage fading going on, but definitely I can’t get this person off my feed either. And now they’ve taken to responding to individual comments with new TikTok and excessive like I don’t know 30 a day it’s ridiculous.

Very well said and I absolutely agree. People are getting too comfortable relying on others when they do have capacity to help themselves, they just don’t have the mindset to make the choice

I have so many thoughts on this. As a disabled person who’s also a vocational rehab counselor, you are spot on that it is a learned helplessness and privilege thing. For sure sometimes you need a break and to step back or go apply to so/ssdi, but we need to take agency in our own lives with our own conditions and limitations. No one can do the work to improve our situation if we are not at minimum matching that effort. It is by no means easy and the world can be very unforgiving but it is necessary. Especially for our own mental health and self worth. Disabled people 100% have to work harder than abled people to do the same amount of shit and it feels incredibly unfair but life is not fair and we have to push as much as we can to meet our own needs.

I was in a very bad way most of the year, flared up for 8 months and the self loathing was on max.I’ve been struggling for 10 years misdiagnosed half that time. I thought after I had my proper diagnosis and treatment I’d be on the up and up, but when life doesn’t zap back to normal or even better the new lows come and yea.. it’s really the stages of grief and your success in getting through it is if you work through all the pain of the process. Self reflection and being honest with yourself is a huge part of it. And your attitude towards your situation will set the tone for your day, week, and year. The nurse practitioner who diagnosed me had her own practice and was sicker than me had my exact illness. She became a specialist in the diagnostic process because it was a passion for her, she didn’t let feeling like death keep her from making a meaningful way through her life. She told me she’s able to still work with reasonable accommodations and enjoying what she does. I’ve had to really work through the feel sorry for myself stuff and I hope she does too. There will always be someone who has it worse than you and using excuses forever to keep yourself a victim to your circumstances will guarantee that the years will go by looking exactly like the last.
