This reminds me of how Squealer, the propagandist pig in Animal Farm (Chapters 2-10), used to twist facts and rewrite history so convincingly that the other animals felt they had misremembered events and rule changes. How he did it: 1. Amending the Seven Commandments: "No animal shall sleep in a bed" became "No animal shall sleep in a bed with sheets" (Ch. 6). "No animal shall drink alcohol" became "No animal shall drink alcohol to excess " (Ch. 8). 2. Rewriting the Battle of the Cowshed: Snowball was first a hero, then Squealer convinced them Snowball was always a criminal and Napoleon was the true hero (Ch. 5 & 8). 3. Fake data: He would read endless lists of figures to prove rations were up 15% and production was up 200%, even when animals were starving. 4. Gaslighting tool: His catchphrase "Surely, comrades, you don't want Jones back?" made any question feel like treason. At the end, the animals stare at the pigs and the humans and can no longer tell them apart. Not because they went blind, but because Squealer convinced them they had been seeing things incorrectly all along.
