BULGARIA EDIT 🇧🇬 (reupload cuz flop) | 🏛️ Ancient Foundations (Pre-7th Century)Before the Bulgars arrived, the region was home to the Thracians, famous for their advanced goldsmithing and legendary figures like Orpheus and the gladiator Spartacus. By the 1st century AD, the Roman Empire conquered the territory, building major hubs like Serdica (Sofia) and Philippopolis (Plovdiv). Following Rome's split, the area became part of the Byzantine Empire, which faced a massive influx of Slavic tribes during the 6th century.👑 The Medieval Empires (681–1396)First Bulgarian Empire (681–1018): Founded by Khan Asparuh in 681 after defeating the Byzantines. In 864, Tsar Boris I adopted Christianity to unify the Bulgar and Slavic populations. Under his patronage, the Cyrillic alphabet was developed, turning Bulgaria into the cultural center of the Slavic world. The empire reached its "Golden Age" under Tsar Simeon the Great, before eventually falling to Byzantium in 1018.Second Bulgarian Empire (1185–1396): Sparked by a successful rebellion led by the brothers Peter and Asen, this empire established its capital at the fortress of Veliko Tarnovo. Under Tsar Ivan Asen II, Bulgaria dominated the Balkans. However, internal feudal divisions later left the country vulnerable to the expanding Ottoman Turks, who fully conquered the region by 1396.🕌 Ottoman Rule & National Awakening (1396–1878)For nearly 500 years, Bulgaria was absorbed into the Ottoman Empire. While the nobility was dismantled, the Bulgarian language and Orthodox faith survived in remote villages and monasteries like Rila. In the 18th century, the National Revival ignited a cultural rebirth. Revolutionaries like Vasil Levski organized underground networks, culminating in the April Uprising of 1876. The brutal Ottoman suppression of the revolt shocked the West and triggered the Russo-Turkish War (1877–1878). With the help of Russian troops, Bulgaria was finally liberated.🪖 World Wars & The Communist Era (1878–1989)Bulgaria declared full independence as a kingdom in 1908. Driven by a desire to unite territories with ethnic Bulgarian majorities, the country fought in the Balkan Wars and allied with Germany in both World Wars. Notably, during WWII, the Bulgarian public, church, and politicians successfully resisted Nazi pressure and saved their entire domestic Jewish population of 50,000.In 1944, the Soviet army occupied the country, abolishing the monarchy and establishing the People's Republic of Bulgaria. The country became one of the most loyal Soviet satellite states. Todor Zhivkov ruled the regime for 35 years (1954–1989), overseeing rapid industrialization alongside the strict suppression of political freedoms.🇪🇺 Modern Democratic Bulgaria (1989–Present)On November 10, 1989, a day after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Zhivkov was ousted. Bulgaria began a peaceful transition to democracy and a market economy. Despite economic turbulence in the 1990s, the country stabilized its economy and integrated into the Western world, officially joining NATO in 2004 and the European Union in 2007. #edit #historytok #historyedit #bulgaria #sofia - @thatczechguy0
