every single interview i have attended was at a workplace with a coffee machine and the hiring manager or HR manager had a coffee of their own. why is it all of the sudden rude if i have my own beverage

I swear to God this is the most American, corporate, capitalistic conversation/debate ever. As a non-American who doesn't live in America, I can’t imagine not getting a job because I had iced coffee with me at the interview. Everybody in my country drinks all kinds of coffee at work, at job interview, at formal events. People usually offer you coffee. And let's not pretend that these aren't completely made up rules. Bringing a coffee to a job interview shows absolutely nothing other than the fact that I was thirsty and that I might be a slow drinker. It takes me two hours to drink a big cup of coffee. And let's not forget that several years ago things like black hair or piercings were considered unprofessional. What's next drinking water during the interview is unprofessional?

i've interviewed at software companies that I knew for a fact had the most liberal casual dress code. Like shorts and T-shirts and flip-flops. But I show up to the interview in a suit and tie. I want to signal that I am serious and respectful and not assuming a permission until I have earned that permission. And sure there are some recruiters that would not bat an eye at someone coming in with a beverage in hand but there are some of that will. Do you want to risk the job? And, no, a recruiter that rejects you because you come in too casual is a not great indication of a toxic workplace. I work in one of the least toxic environments I have ever worked in and I am pretty sure given two reasonably equal candidates that the one who assumed too much would be rejected.

So I do agree with people bringing like a water bottle with them to an interview. I don’t agree with the whole iced coffee thing and you bring the argument of Thai. I live in Australia in Perth. It’s a lot more casual here. Thai would not work for our sort of interviews depending on life. It’s really corporate. The majority of the time a tie would actually be seeing this inappropriate.

I don't understand why people get confused. You're there for a very specific reason, for a very limited amount of time. Anything else can be done around it. You're not bringing snacks, don't bring drinks, whole attention there. If they offer you something, ffs take it if you feel like it, otherwise fulfill your needs/desires at any otherpointof the day.

if i have 2 candidates of the same quality, one has an iced coffee and one doesn't. nothing changes for either, in fact at this point im leaning towards the ice coffee holder because they actually showed some of themselves. no wonder companies are so up shit Creek with hiring managers that are how they are

Nah I’m usually about professionalism in the workspace and etc but coming in with a drink to an interview anywhere is not and should not be a deal breaker.. don’t care what job interview it is a drink should be offered… should the standard be a glass of water yes don’t make them get you a coffee or etc unless they offer…. But bringing something already for the interview and bypassing that step and having the drink you want… is not something that should have you disqualified from being a hire..

I’m a coffee addict. However, I can go without my emotional support iced coffee for 45 minutes. I would leave early, stop off and get one, and drink it before I entered the interview. That shows even better time management skills that zipping into the Starbucks and not having time to drink it. Not drinking at first doesn’t show good time management skills like you say. It shows that they didn’t leave enough time to take care of that before the interview.

yea the expectation that people have to wear a tie, a suit, or whatever is also daft. these sorts of things don't actually serve as reliable signals cos it's perfectly possible and in fact quite common for people to conform to these norms and be unprofessional in the ways that actually matter: bullying, harassment, abuse of power, generally being an arsehat, that kind of thing.

I think people need to also be mindful that some workplaces are very different than others. I work in addiction treatment. The amount of SOP’s in a workplace like this are enormous. If you feel entitled to your own opinion you may overstep boundaries for client safety. The rules exist for this reason. If you show up at an interview not understanding a workplace that needs high structure that will be interpreted as such.
