@sarah_kamen: Did you know that as sea turtles grow they shed the outer layer of their scutes (shell)?! 🐢 A lot of the patients we see have scutes that begin to lift due to their age and growth rates. This gives barnacles the perfect opportunity to weasel their way into the lifted areas and burrow onto the shells. Hamm here is a growing loggerhead sea turtle that came into the center after being accidentally hooked by a fisherman. Because of those shedding scutes, the barnacles you see definitely took advantage! Hamm enjoyed a relaxing spa day including barnacle removal and a nice scrub down 🫧🧽 #barnacles #seaturtle #marineconservation #seaturtlerehab #barnacleremoval
