For a long time I've felt more uncomfortable saying African American than black because African American assumes some identifies as being from Africa and that they are American.

no one says European Americans colloquially and that's the problem. it's awkward bc it's a mean of othering. it promotes a quiet hierarchical chart within the vocabulary.

It would sound weird to call European American, to all white people. I think Black sounds good, same as hispanic.

I said black people, in a work meeting, while talking to a black man. i'm a white women. he didnt bat an eye. but my white workers looked horrified. while talking to 2 women, I pointed to 2 men and told her the short ones name is so and so. the tall one is so and so. she gasped like I'd said a slur. ppl love to put others into a box, but cant handle adjectives.

it's not enough to "have black friends". you need to be the kinds of friends that have the deep conversations where you care deeply so youll be able to hear what they say even if its a hard pill to swallow

So I realized then when I point out other kids or people I never say oh the white kid or the brown kid I say oh the little girl with the red bow…. The lady with the pink sweater, I try not to use color to describe someone I try to be equal by describing them by what they are wearing or doing

I’m white and I just to everybody, black, white, Asian, whatever one of two things. Hey there my friend, or hey there my brother. That’s for men obviously. For women, I have several, my favorite, especially if the woman is older I say, young lady, 😏, it playful, and usually gets a smile. But ma’am or miss. The key is to be relaxed, comfortable in your approach. As a DJ I meet new people almost every night, and this has never failed me.
