the hardest part about being a man, specifically a blue collar man, is the knowledge that my body is going to break long before people are done relying on me.

I'm copy pasting my husband's fb response. that is the only social media he has and he rarely engages, and when he does it's usually on a surface level. So it's a big deal for him that he stepped into this ring. he said at first he didn't want to comment because he felt it wasnt his place, but he felt Noah created an environment that he could.

The mental health of being a man(at least for me). There is and has been an expectation for us to be a certain way. We are all different and sometimes need some help and guidance. I was very much a believer that therapy wouldn't change me or provide me help. I was very wrong in this. We strain and press from the rigors of everyday concerns and inner conflicts. I didn't voice or know how to voice my inner processes, concerns, or feelings, as some of that was suppressed when we were growing up. "You have to...." or "you can't say" was something I was raised in. I found that after the sessions, I was better at expressing myself constructively and clearly with everyone. I also established boundaries for myself and understand others boundaries are not for me to cross unless absolutely necessary. I learned that is okay to say give me a minute while I phrase this properly, instead of just blasting out the first thing that comes across where it can be harmful. Look at both sides, your words can be as dangerous wielding a weapon around. It's okay to express your feelings with not just your family. But everyone around you in this world. I found my childlike love for things again and naturally smile. There are other things I can add, but the mental part for me has been the primary one. - Mr. Kitty 😺

Having REAL conversations with other men, especially around emotion or deep topics. Conversations are almost always surface level. Having a wife that really pushes for the deep thoughts and conversations helps so much, but finding that same level of discussion outside of my relationship with my wife is very difficult.

I'm answering for mine, because he passed 4 years ago. But we had this discussion, and I remember what he said.
"We're supposed to be and act like men, but when we do, it's "too much". Damned if we do, damned if we don't."
I just looked at him, and then he said, "Not by you, Babygirl. Everyone else."
I miss him every day.

traditional and modern expectations being pushed on us, simultaneously, while not being allowed to expect anything from women.
we must be providers and display all the "manly" traits of yesteryears, while also taking on 50% of the domestic work that used to be pink jobs- but all the blue jobs are still ours too.
at the same time, we're wrong to expect women to split bills 50-50 if they work, and also wrong to expect them to take on the stay at home spouse duties if they dont work.

Trying to carry everything for everyone. Secondly struggling to accept help from others to set some of that burden down. The women may not “expect us” to do it all but we think they do. Now I’m off to read the comments in the other video. Thanks for promoting conversations like these.

I asked my 22 year old pan feminist son (who appears very masculine when you look at him, has a very deep voice, and very few outwardly feminine traits). This is what he said to me:
"I'm really not sure. I think it's having to kinda like code switch in a way, between being my normal self and acting more masculine/manly when talking with other men. While it is more socially acceptable to not be some super masculine manly man it's still kinda expected from most people, or really men, to be."
(He does computer coding for fun if you cannot tell by the terms he uses.)
Anyway.... I understand exactly what he is saying. Because we are here in west virginia, where everything is maga coded and we are blue dots in a very red state. We live in a state where they still call something gay as a way to put something down and use the r slur like it's just another word, and believe everything fox news and their orange king says. My biggest dream would be to live in a very liberal area.

oh damn. I wish everyone understood a man's life. being "a man" means adjectives... not understanding. generations have made men feel this and today as well. Men are considered "weak" if they go to doctor, hospital, caring about themselves. plays on male ego and not ok. Men it is NOT WEAK to take care of self. I hate this entire stigma bc men suffer bc of this personna

Vulnerability is a double edged sword. If we aren't vulnerable and open with expressing emotions outside of happy and angry, we are cold or mean. If we are vulnerable it sometimes gets weaponized against us and we are made fun of, eg getting called a girl. There is a double standard is society when we do things outside societal norms like getting our nails done.
We need to do a better job raising our boys to express the full range of emotions and not make anyone feel lesser of a person for doing so. We need to teach boys respect and be examples of how to truly love a women by making her feel seen, heard and most importantly safe
