unpopular assumption: anyone who says it's terrible writing is probably a fan of the fourth wing/ACOTAR series. the style of t. kingfisher style is minimalistic and pragmatic and some people seem to take issue with that. I suggest you read it and form your own opinion rather than listen to reviews

Unfortunately it sounds like the author missed the mark on Astarion's BG3 character. Fortunately, my wife has a multi-novel fanfic in the works that honours and more deeply explores spawn Astarion's true character (along with rejected-Bhaal Durge) after the events in BG3. She's already working on the 4th book and I think it could really end up being cherished by the community.
