@dreelegend: The Bridges-McKellar Mansion, frequently misspelled as “Bridgers-McKellar,” is a historic Queen Anne-style residence in Shreveport, Louisiana, affectionately known as “Theodosia.” Designed in 1885 by noted architect Perry Bridges, the mansion was built for Reuben Neil McKellar, a prominent businessman who helped fund some of Shreveport’s early street-paving projects and later served as the city’s 31st mayor from 1896 to 1899. McKellar named the grand residence after his wife, Theodosia Hamilton McKellar. The mansion originally stood as part of a prestigious stretch of grand homes known as “Mansion Row.” Today, it is considered the last surviving downtown mansion outside of the Historic Austen Place district, with the surrounding estates having disappeared through fire and demolition. The two-story residence features a basement and expansive attic, along with historic details including intricate wood paneling, pocket doors, a grand staircase with an ornate window, a rear carriage house, and a large stone cistern. Local historical accounts also credit the home with being among the first in Shreveport to feature indoor plumbing, electricity, and an early forced-air ventilation system. After decades of neglect, vandalism, and exposure to the elements, the Bridges-McKellar Mansion has fallen into a severely deteriorated condition and has been listed among Louisiana’s Most Endangered Places. Missing floorboards and structural deterioration have made the property especially dangerous, and the mansion is not open to the public.
