Replying to @Leah J 🏳️‍🌈 Boys mental health does not get enough space in the parenting conversation. I want to change that. 1. Teenage boys feel everything. What they have often been taught is that showing it is not acceptable. Those are two completely separate things, and conflating them leads parents to conclude their son is fine when he is not. 2. When a teenage boy fully withdraws to his room and stops communicating, he is almost never fine. He is processing something he does not yet have the language for. 3. Teenage boys need connection just as much as teenage girls. They have simply been socialized into fewer acceptable ways to access and express that need. 4. Anger in teenage boys is almost always a translation of something else like fear, shame, grief, or overwhelm. When we only address the anger, we are addressing the symptom. 5. Male friendships in adolescence are often built around shared activity rather than explicit emotional conversation. That form of connection is legitimate and important. Protecting time for it matters. 6. The teenage boy who seems unbothered by everything, who shrugs at every question, who gives one-word answers, can be the one carrying the most. 7. Conversations with teenage boys about anything important works better in motion than face to face. Drive somewhere. Walk. Shoot hoops. The conversation tends to come on its own. Share this with a parent who is raising a boy right now. Make sure you are following so the message goes through. #ParentingTeens #TeenMentalHealth #ChildPsychiatrist #EvidenceBasedParenting #parenting
