Spaulding Drive. The spot sat on University of Tampa land. He came for a DUI check. Witnesses said the Hyundai driver, 22-year-old Ainsley Fitzgerald, went the wrong way past a Do Not Enter sign. She also toppled several traffic cones. Officer Baar talked to her. He saw signs of impairment. He smelled alcohol on her breath. She admitted to one glass of wine that night. He asked her to step out and do sobriety tests. He began with the Horizontal Gaze Nystagmus test. Next came the Walk and Turn. Ainsley missed heel-to-toe steps. She turned the wrong way. Last was the One Leg Stand. She failed to lift her foot right. She could not count 30 seconds well. Her wild driving, impairment clues, alcohol smell, her own words about the wine, and bad test results led to arrest for DUI. A vehicle search found open alcohol containers. After cuffs went on, she said she served in the Army Reserves. Officer Baar took her to Hillsborough County Sheriff’s Office. There, she skipped the breath test.
