A Hurricane Watch is now in effect for the Big Island, and residents there should follow advice given by local officials, including evacuating if told to do so. The time to prepare for significant heavy rain and flooding impacts on the Big Island is now, as heavy rain becomes more likely by Thursday and Friday. Periods of heavy rain are likely to continue across the Big Island and Maui through the weekend. Life-threatening, catastrophic flooding and mudslides are possible, especially in areas of steep terrain across the Big Island and Maui. Across the remainder of Hawaii, lesser rainfall totals are expected, with isolated flooding possible. Large and damaging waves are possible along the coast of the Big Island into the weekend. Interests elsewhere in Hawaii should closely monitor the latest forecast updates and ensure that they have their preparedness plan in place. Information for Hurricane Category 1 Odalys: (from NHC) Odalys' convective organization has not changed much in the past several hours. However, the hurricane continues to produce very deep convection near the center, with cloud-top temperatures as cold as -90°C. The subjective Dvorak intensity estimate from TAFB came in at 4.0/65 knots, and objective estimates of DMINT and ADT from UW-CIMSS showed values of 68 and 72, respectively. Given these data and the deeper convection, the initial intensity is raised to 80 mph (70 knots). Information for Major Hurricane Category 4 Polo: (from NHC) Heavy rainfall associated with Polo will impact coastal portions of southwest Mexico through Thursday. This rainfall may produce life-threatening flooding and mudslides, especially in areas of steep terrain. A Tropical Storm Warning is in effect for portions of southwestern Mexico from Tecpan de Galeana to Punta San Telmo, and a Tropical Storm Watch is in effect west of that to Playa Perula. Interests in these areas should closely monitor updates to the forecast. Satellite imagery this afternoon (23 September) suggests that Polo seems to be at or near the end of its eyewall replacement cycle, as the eyewall cloud tops have gotten colder during the past several hours, and the eye is gradually becoming more distinct. The various satellite intensity estimates are lower than they were six hours ago, but they are no longer falling. The initial intensity is lowered to 145 mph (125 knots), and for the moment that could still be a little generous. The hurricane's outer rainbands continue to affect the coast of Mexico.
