EJ253 head gaskets are not $6,000. PM me with a list of repair work they’re saying you need and I’ll give you an accurate estimate. I own a Subaru engine shop in Denver.

Head gasket number one issue with Subaru, I don’t know if it’s any different with today’s newer models, but overall a car that needs to be constantly serviced by the book.

If its new headgaskets, water pump, pulleys, spark plugs, and oil and coolant in should not be $6k. I had that same work done and it cost $3200 at the dealership on my 07 Outback . And my sister had the same work done on her 2010 Outback and it was $2400. And that’s using Factory quality parts. Go to an independent shop, call around and get quotes or something

i have a 2015 impreza who was just out for a while due to oil in the coolant! i never took the motor apart to see the actual issue… but per research, i want to say this is caused by oil pan o rings going out. something along the lines of that. anyway, couldn’t tell you how much it should cost. i did the repairs on my own, AKA swapped the motor on my own. it probably cost me $2k total. you could very well buy a rebuilt motor and just pay someone to stick it in there as well!! i have tons of options to have a rebuilt motor dropped off on my doorstep in the PNW. you could see if you have that option at all. maybe it’ll come out cheaper?

No shade but it seems like you didn't stay on top of your maintenance. Being a Subaru owner means knowing that you have to be on top of preventative maintenance

Put the 6k into a used Toyota Rav4! You cant just “reseal head gaskets” without machining the engine block and cylinder heads flat first. It may be a horizontal Porsche Boxter engine but…The tech didnt mention compression tests and exhaust in the cooling system which is other ways to diagnose a blown head gasket.

I know this is stressful AF, especially when living in your car. You'll make it and it'll be worth it! That positive energy is going to get you through anything life throws your way! Are you doing okay?

I know you said previously, you bought the Subaru in July because you thought about this in January and you accumulated the expense over $9000 to make this purchase and less than two months. You now have this repair bill. moving forward into the future since you’re saving so much money on rent would you be saving for future repairs or possibly a newer Subaru outback?

Long time Subaru owner (Outback+Foresters): So sad to see one go but definitely looks like a head gasket blown, was more common on the older (pre-2015) models. Haven’t priced out a failure like that in a while but 6k seems like almost full engine replacement to me rather than just radiator, thermostat, and head gasket reseal. It’s pretty labor-intensive since the engine has to be pulled but I’d call around to any Subaru shops in your area and get quotes at least. It may just be worth it to throw a new motor in it depending on the cost of a used one with warranty

I get it girl! I had to put a new motor in my car last month. Most people wouldn’t think it was worth it, but it’s usually just best to fix what you have. You’re doing the right thing, you’ll get back in no time!

My 2015 Subaru Outback. Had to get a new engine a few years ago. And now something with transmission is going on. I did drive for DoorDash so I put a lot of miles on her. She’s still running so that’s good she’s still holding on!

Don’t waste this money, by the time you pay this off another thing will be wrong with the car….. you’d be better off getting lease for cheap, I know Nissan was doing leases for $20/month.

At $6k, I would’ve just replaced the radiator hose and kept driving it. A little oil getting into the coolant isn’t ideal, but it’s not the end of the world either. Basically every Subaru has a little oil in the coolant, haha. It’s not always the head gasket either. There are other things that can cause oil contamination in the coolant.

As someone who drives a Subaru and has had car issues my whole life, take that 6k and put it towards a new car. It’s not worth it to put that much back into this car. Trust me. I spent 3k on my Subaru last year and I’m still in a hole from it. The radiator should only be a $400-500 fix. I’m not sure about the HG. Good luck friend
