Picture the other side of the couch. Your partner said something, and now you're giving them one-word answers. From where they sit, the room just got colder and nobody told them why. They're replaying the last ten minutes. They're wondering if you're mad, hurt, or done talking for the night. Often, they're guessing wrong. This is one of the most common patterns I see in the couples I sit with. One person gets hurt and goes quiet. The other person feels the quiet and starts filling in the blanks. This is one of the most common patterns I see in the couples I sit with. One person gets hurt and goes quiet. The other person feels the quiet and starts filling in the blanks. And the longer it runs, the further the story in their head can drift from what really happened. Going quiet when you're hurt makes sense. For a lot of people, saying "that stung" out loud feels riskier than holding it in. The quiet can feel like protection. I still do it too, after all these years of doing this work. I know this pattern inside and out, and I still catch myself in it. What practice gives me is speed. I notice sooner. The habit I teach is small. Before the quiet hardens, say one sentence: "I'm going quiet because that hurt. I need a little bit, and I'll come back to it." The full explanation can wait. You're letting your partner know you haven't gone anywhere. That one sentence can save you both hours of guessing. If you tend to go quiet, you're in good company. And if you're usually the one on the other side of the silence, it might help to know that quiet often means hurt, and hurt often means your partner still cares. What does your quiet usually look like at home? #silenttreatment #marriageadvice #relationshipadvice #couplescommunication #healthyrelationships This is relationship education, not therapy, and nothing here creates a therapist-client relationship.
