For decades, the public was expected to take an officer’s word for what happened. Body cameras and citizens exercising their First Amendment right to record government officials in public changed that equation. Transparency is not an attack on law enforcement—it is a constitutional check on government power. When the public can see what actually happened, officers who uphold the Constitution have nothing to fear; those who violate it can no longer rely solely on their badge and official report to control the narrative. The camera is the citizen’s witness, and transparency is accountability.
