@askaneuroscientist: Yes, absolutely develop that skill of introducing yourself to people! But that’s the first step, not the last step! You should be continuing the conversation/relationship after that if you want to have a meaningful interaction (which is important for mentorship, rec letters, and overall general networking!)! #academia #college #university #professortok
I was always so confused as a student when people said “show up to office hours” ..show up and say what? I never really had questions or issues in any of my courses which is what I understood office hours to be for so I did not understand this advice at allll

I was told “make sure your lecturers know your name and face” aka show up, answer questions, ask questions, and be visibly involved. I’ve been told that the difference between rounding up and rounding down is often “hey, I know this person has put in the work, lets give them the benefit of the doubt”

I think most people forget, especially for scientists, professors are people who are sometimes quite socially awkward. I think the majority of my professors were interesting people, but just walking up and holding out your hand can be really awkward.

Omg I wanted to do a video on this. Please DON’T come up just to introduce yourself. Find a valid reason to interact.

This. Awkward to have a line of 15+ students in a line all doing this. I want to get to know my students, but this isn't it. I also want to answer urgent and/or important questions on that first day

I have never introduced myself to professors and a surprising number knew who I was. I think it was just because I did well and asked good questions in rooms full of students that wouldn't raise their hands ever.

This is great advice and I agree fully with this advice however, I am somewhat bewildered. That undergraduate students are not able to come to this conclusion on their own when they are told to introduce themselves to their professors. Am I missing something?

I think this depends on where you teach. I teach at a small liberal arts where my lecture classes are capped at 30 and where discussion participation is a big part of the grade and so it helps me when students introduce themselves. But if I was at a research university with 100 students in each lecture then no, it’s not helpful.

Do you have any advice for online students? I wish I could do school in person, but it wasn’t possible financially. I’ve tried really hard to form a relationship with my professors, but they pretty much just ignore anything that isn’t a very specific question about an assignment

If I am just a nerdy student and find interesting topics related to the class work that aren’t covered, is it appropriate to email my professor about it to ask their opinion or just to share? I’m online. Not solely for building rapport but because I just find things interesting and want to share I guess?

this is why I make a point of trying to take the *same* professors multiple semesters - ie, I intentionally took Chem 1 with the only professor that does OChem 1 and 2 at my school. I'm planning to take the same professor for A&P2 as I did for A&P1. Same professor for Precalc as Trig, etc. I'm also one of those kids that's always chatted with teachers/professors throughout the term though, so my professors tend to remember me anyway.

This advice is excellent, but it always confuses me that it needs to be said. If someone is at university, surely they’re intelligent and thoughtful enough to think the process of relationship building through. One would hope, at least.

The “Introduce Myself” types always seemed to want to do the introduction at the end of the first class in a back-to-back schedule chaos where we have 10 minutes between classes to hoof it halfway across campus

They’ve started introducing themselves BEFORE the semester begins at my college. The week before classes started, there were a TON of students looking for their profs and were disappointed when we weren’t on campus. The week before classes is one of my last work from home times before the semester begins and you better bet I’m taking advantage of that focus time.

My first year of university I introduced myself to my bio prof, I asked questions after almost every lecture, and I attended like one of her office hours… three years later she still remembers my name and says hello to me when she sees me volunteering, and said she’s happy I’m in her class again. I’ve had a few profs who I could never take a class with again, but I’d walk with them to their offices after class and have conversations, and it felt so nice. I miss them💔 I wish my first year wasn’t so bad, because I had so many incredible profs that idk how to reach out again, lol!

i never knew about this in college but ended up doing it naturally. i was involved in student orgs related to my major/minors and some profs were also involved in those things (advisors, attending events, etc.) i also had jobs on campus working in those depts and did some TA/intern stuff. those all naturally led to seeing the same profs regularly outside of just classes!

I introduced myself to professors in undergrad usually by using the email where I was sending them my accommodation letter. It worked pretty well. In grad school and now as I prep for a PhD, I introduce myself still initially via email but in the manner of “I saw you were interested in these things, I am also interested. Would I be able to ask you questions?” And it’s rather effective thus far haha

I guarantee that if you attend every class, sit relatively near the front, and participate/ask questions sometimes, your professors will start to know who you are. Even in lectures with hundreds of students, attendance is usually super low by the middle of the semester, and just showing up matters way more than introducing yourself on the first day

I have no context here. What is this advice supposed to do? 😂 WHY do they supposedly need to introduce themselves? To get better grades? Lmao

Yes, please stop introducing yourself to me after our day 1 class. I will have forgotten your name by the time I get out of the room.

most of my profs did office hours by appointment only and would answer questions not related to their course with "you won't need to know that for the test" and send you away lol but I wasn't pre-med so maybe it's different in those programs

Office hours-mine went to ask questions about hw and the more she went they developed a rapport then hw questions would last 5 minutes and then the talk turned into career advice, how other classes were going etc.
