@thebraintumorsurgeon: Protect your kids with these simple rules. 🧠 A recent study published in the prestigious @the_bmj_ 8/2026 looked at over 1700 NGL players that passed away between 2008 and 2021- and they found a whopping 25% had CTE (chronic traumatic encephalopathy). This condition causes a progressive, incurable brain disease due to buildup of abnormal proteins in the brain that destroy healthy brain cells. There were additional cases linked to CTE in non-donors. Soccer has also come under intense scrutiny for heading practices linked to CTE and resultant dementia in players https://link.springer.com/article/10.1007/s00401-017-1680-3 Even at a less severe level, younger age of exposure to American football was associated with worse brain behavioral issues in adulthood. The risk is suspected to be cumulative, so the earlier you start and longer you play, the higher the risk. Repeated concussions from any sport, including ice hockey, are a risk. This study showed an alarmingly high rate (41%) of changes consistent with mild CTE in contact sports athletes under the age of 30: https://jamanetwork.com/journals/jamaneurology/fullarticle/2808952 Repetitive lower impact head trauma, as seen with soccer heading, are a major cause for concern, and the reason this practice is banned in young children. https://www.jospt.org/doi/10.2519/jospt.2020.0608 🧠 E-bikes and E-scooters have been linked to an alarming rise in injuries and head trauma. Those of us who take trauma call see a head injury nearly every day from these "micromobility" vehicles. https://journals.lww.com/neurosurgery/fulltext/10.1227/neu.0000000000003995~the-fast-and-the-fragile-neurosurgical-trauma-in-the-age-of Motorcycles and ATVs have long been associated with head trauma. 🧠 Red and processed meats have been strongly linked to colorectal cancer. Charring meat releases chemicals labeled a class 1 carcinogen, meaning a cancer causing agent. This is particularly true for colorectal and other GI cancers which are increasingly common in young patients. https://pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/40210826/ Go ahead internet, hate away. I'll keep my kids safe. #kidssports #brainhealth #cte #neurosurgeon

I think for the last one it’s everything in moderation. Red meat can be good for you but in excessive amounts, it can harm you like with anything else. I think it’s good to point out in excessive quantities. Once or twice a week results in no harm.

my husband went on the steak diet to lower his diabetes. He did lower his A1c and he cooks the steak clean with only salt n pepper but that’s all he eats and his test results are coming good but I’m so worried about the long term effects. He thinks he found the cure for diabetes with this steak diet ugh

I grew up playing soccer my whole life. My senior year I got my 4th bad concussion, my mental health has been sh*t ever since. I don’t even remember my senior year post concussion. I wish there was more advocacy for just how dangerous sports can be😭❤️
