@virginia_mortgage_lender: Why is nobody talking about this part of the discussion? The bar for homeownership is moving so far ahead of the average American family with children #housingcrisis #realestate #firsttimehomebuyer

MD has unreasonable high cost townhomes because of good school districts. It’s insane. I got my start up home in a district with less favorable schools and ended up with a mansion just for myself. That was the best decade ever. Then family started and got the house by the bay because I banked on that starter home when families started rushing in. It’s insane.

I also feel like a starter home should not be a "fixer upper" or something that needs a full remodel/gut situation. Some small repairs and maybe updating a few things, but it should generally be move in ready. Most homes I see for sale are like dilapidated shacks that need a new roof, the foundation is cracked, nothing's been replaced since it was built in the 60s. What first time home buyer is going to have the capacity to deal with all of that

But let's also acknowledge that yeah, a starter home might have cabinets from the 70s/80s and maybe there's old carpet that needs to be replaced, and bathroom sinks might have tiny vanities. HOWEVER, the houses in the 'starter home price range' have bathrooms that need to be torn out because of mold, the roof hasn't been taken care of, and everything is deteriorating.

They’re also missing the fact that first time home buyers are renting and a lot of times are in 2 bed/1 bath, 2 bed/2 bath. I pay $1500/month for a 2 bed/1 bath and literally cannot find anything 3 bed/2 bath house to buy for less than $4000/month mortgage

I’m single/no kids, but I’m 36 and have been saving over 10 years. At my stage, I want my forever home. My parents are still living in the same home they bought in their mid 30s. It hurts to have to settle for so much less than they’ve ever had while working so much more.

I have a 900 ft.² two bed one bath A frame. This house could easily provide for a couple and a child and a dog. That is what a starter house should do. It should get you through until you have a small family and decide how far you want to take it and buy your permanent home. That first house should get you to a point where your first child has some great memories there and they want siblings, but there isn’t enough room so we need to expand the family expand the home. A starter home should absolutely get a couple started That’s the point. I am very blessed with my house, I am renting it and it is a fantastic opportunity, but realistically this is what a starter home should be. Sadly, it’s not what it is because of that lovely little age range that beautiful woman in the video was talking about. But a starter home should get you started until you are building permanently.

And this is why ppl aren’t having kids! As a young adult if I can’t even afford to buy a “starter home” I especially don’t wanna bring kids into this world and make it harder on both of us💀

People should not have kids close to when they want to purchase a home. Sadly in today time you have to be very intentional about everything. If want to own a home, wait to have kids.

Hopefully we’ll be able to get our forever home or land in the upcoming months. We’ve found a 4bed 2 bath house that I think is super cute it’s needs some renovation but it’s 190k our other option is 10 acres for 230k but the house is in terrible condition and can’t be lived in so we’ll definitely have to negotiate price

Starter home isn't about size it's about age and upkeep needed. It's a little run down and you need to do some TLC to make it look great.

THANK YOU. I think folks have the attitude that you should just take too small, too far from work, too this too that if you want a house because I’m convinced they think we are still very young. My husband and I don’t have kids but we both work from home and can’t share an office space… so we need space! But more, I’d be fine with a smaller house but it hard to even find a 1.5 house that’s smaller! It’s 3+ beds to get 2 toilets and if I’m renting something that has all these things, yes I’d like it in something I’m owning.

I also feel like “starter homes” are turning into forever homes with the economy so of course people want something nice. I see so many people who have good interest rates from a few years ago so they don’t want to give up that rate even though they may have outgrown their home

This! My husband and I are mid-30s and got married last year. We skipped the whole starter home thing and bought a house that we plan to stay in longer term because the “starter homes” in our area are just as expensive as the larger ones, and it’s not looking to get better any time soon. I also do NOT want to be house selling/buying and moving during a time we will most likely be in the middle having babies and raising very young children. I think some of our family was a little judgy with us about the cost of our home, thinking it wasn’t a “wise” choice, but they all bought their homes in very different times and circumstances than what we’ve been dealt with over the past like five years. It was the best decision we could have made for our needs and circumstances.

a starter home implies you are going to upgrade at some point to a forever home, but we are at the stage of life where it’s time for the forever home. my apartment is my starter home.

We just got a 3 bed 2.5 bath with a full basement which adds more space. It’s our starter. She’s 86 years old but she’s honest and sturdy!

We shouldn't have to save and invest for 10+ years with nothing going wrong to afford to... start. By then we have left the phase of life a 2b1b fits. "Starters" should match the average income/phase of life of the people actually starting.

there's a 1 bed 1 bath selling near me for 450,000 in MA. that would be a great house for someone in their 20s or they are single, but its not going to work for the majority of the population in the housing market

I agree. Our “starter house” in Boston was $600k 3 beds and 1(one!) bathroom. We now have 3 kids. We need more space, but can’t stomach our mortgage more than doubling even though we could “afford” it.
