I believe they also missed a very important phenomenon which is that a bus that arrives very late is going to have more passengers than normal, meaning there’s a possibility that you won’t even be able to board once it does arrive. In these very real scenarios, you’d be forced to wait for the second arriving bus (which may or may not itself be arriving late).

King county metro (Seattle's county) has a trip planner that allows you to select "mixing" cycling with riding a bus and it just says to ride the bus for basically every pair of locations at all times lol

Used to live on Brixton Hill. About a mile from the tube station. Always walked. Always quicker than the bus, even though it was a main bus route. As the saying goes: no bus for an hour, then 5 come at once... it was true.
