I actually had somebody do hair for my wedding and they were a little more expensive so I had a second person come for a few of the girls that was more in their budget… And afterwards some of them weren't happy with their hair. So I mean you get what you pay for 🤣

Honestly they never complain about quotes from the photographers/ event coordinators / decorations/ flowers etc.. it’s always the hair and makeup and it’s so frustrating.

At the end of the day there is someone for everyone’s budget. But the people who post these angry TikTok’s are usually scrolling right past those artists bc they either don’t have a lot of likes/followers/views OR they just don’t like their work. And instead, they see the artist with min 10k followers, love THEIR work, want THEIR professionalism, THEIR expertise, and then get mad that that specific artist isn’t in their budget and believe they should be cheaper. There is a difference between liking someone’s work and valuing it. These people loooove the work but they don’t see they value in it and sure, they don’t need to. I personally don’t see the value of a g wagon AND I can’t afford it, so I drive my mazdaratti and I’m perfectly fine with that lol. I don’t post think pieces on why g wagons shouldn’t cost that much?? People don’t do this nearly as often with any other industry. But beauty service providers are predominately women and we are seen as “unskilled laborers” bc you don’t need a college degree.

I saw the same video, and I find it so strange how other contractors aren’t questioned about their pricing nearly as much as beauty providers. Graphic designers, auto mechanics, plumbers, etc. are all expensive, but when it comes to those types of contractors, people acknowledge that it’s a skill they don’t have, they don’t have professional products to do it, and/or that if they tried to do it themselves, it wouldn’t be the result they’re hoping for. Could I change my oil myself instead of paying $100+ for someone else to do it? Yeah but I don’t want to take the time to learn how and don’t want the risk of making a mistake doing it because I’m not a professional. I don’t question the mechanic on why he charges so much, ultimately I can understand I am paying for the “luxury” of being able to sit and have my car serviced without having to do anything. I don’t understand why hair and makeup artists specifically get singled out for their pricing. It’s skilled labor. If everybody could just do it themselves and get the same result, we wouldn’t be in business. And especially in the wedding industry, people don’t bat an eye at spending $10k+ on photographers, videographers, event coordinators, etc. Hair and makeup are also a service that requires skill, experience, products, time, and expertise.

not just family vacations and birthday parties but as a mom who has an almost 4 year old, I'll be missing out on soccer games, basketball games, zoo trips, etc. it makes me sad to think about missing those things for a job that I also love and allows my family to enjoy things like that

I think there's also a lot of miscommunication about how much we charge is not how much we actually make.... as you discussed overhead, too many stylists talk about their "income" but they're really just talking about their gross sales revenue. this is disingenuous and confusing for both clients and up and coming cosmetologists.

Nurses make a lot of money. At least in NYC area they do. They also get benefits, pension, retirement, PTO etc etc. freelance workers get none of that.

The only people that sit here and criticize our prices are people that don't even know how much time and money we invest on our tools, our education and the fact we're independent contractors with no benefits. It's absolutely ridiculous having to justify our prices.
