@archives.magazine: The Weeknd in the studio recording a choir for the Super Bowl version of « The Hills ». This footage comes from The Show, a documentary about the making of The Weeknd’s Super Bowl LV halftime show directed by Nadia Hallgren. The Show was released on September 24, 2021, and was broadcast and distributed by Showtime. The footage shows The Weeknd and his team working in the studio before the Super Bowl. The goal was to prepare new versions of his songs for the live show. This included new vocal arrangements and a choir. The choir was an important part of the performance. For “The Hills,” the team wanted the song to work on a much bigger stage. The original track is dark and very personal. The Super Bowl version had to sound bigger and more dramatic. The live arrangement gave the song more space and power. The original version of « The Hills » was produced Illangelo and Mano. The song was written by The Weeknd, Illangelo, Mano, Belly and Thomas Raybould. The original recording was made at Abel’s Crib. Illangelo was the recording engineer and also mixed the song. Mano first made the original demo and sent it to The Weeknd. Illangelo then worked on the track with him. The mastering was done by Tom Coyne. “The Hills” was released on May 27, 2015. It was the second single from The Weeknd’s second studio album, Beauty Behind the Madness. The song quickly became one of the biggest tracks of his career. It reached No. 1 on the Billboard Hot 100 in the United States and stayed there for six weeks. The song also won important awards. At the 2016 Billboard Music Awards, “The Hills” won Top R&B Song and Top Streaming Song. Beauty Behind the Madness also won Top R&B Album. The album had success at the Grammy Awards as well. Beauty Behind the Madness was nominated for Album of the Year and won Best Urban Contemporary Album at the 2016 Grammys. #makingof #theweeknd #studio #session #SuperBowl
