At the same time, the CIA was involved in a covert operation against Patrice Lumumba, the Congo’s first democratically elected prime minister. Lumumba was removed from power and murdered in Katanga on January 17, 1961. So what happened in the Congo after independence? Why was Patrice Lumumba targeted?
